Care & Maintenance

Natural Woven Materials

Patio chairs and couches can come in many different materials, ranging from banana leaf, water hyacinth, wicker, seagrass, fietriet or kubu…the options on materials and finishes are endless. Coffee tables and side tables can be chosen to match, be it an old antique coffee table or a nice teak coffee table…one can use your own discretion here.

One has to keep in mind that these are natural materials and should not be exposed to all weather conditions…ideally suited for a sun room or covered patio.

I also recommend that if it is being used for a patio that durable material is used, the best one would be Kubu, this is a very thick form of wicker, about 5mm thick. The other option would be fietriet which is a stronger material than wicker. These products are normally woven together over wooden structures.

It creates a really relaxed and informal setting and over and above this it looks great on any balcony…keep in mind that it should not be fully exposed to the weather conditions. Plastic slips for these couches and chairs are available for the winter seasons when they are not in use, at any of our stores.

Should they get wet and become a bit moldy then simply let it dry and apply some pure alcohol with a small paint brush. If they do pick up some dirt then it is recommended to give it a light scrub with soft bristle brush.

Caring for your Teak Furniture

Quality and price of teak can vary depending on the grade of wood used.

Indofurn uses only A-Grade wood, this can be recognised by the even colour of wood throughout the product. The lower quality teak has a lot of sap wood, this can be recognised by the uneven spread of colour especially with a lot of white wood appearing.

Teak has the most amazing qualities and is truly a beautiful wood. If cared for correctly it will last you a lifetime... the designs are timeless and will continue in this fashion, the most important factor is to understand how to care for your furniture, it is a very basic process as described below but it must be adhered to.

THE WEATHERING AND CLEANING PROCESS

Teak outdoor furniture, when left outdoors, will turn a handsome silver-grey. This process will take approximately 12 to 18 months, depending on the amount of sunlight and rain exposure. The end result is furniture with a timeless appeal. The grain will return to its original smooth finish after the initial weathering process and has no affect on the stability of the furniture in any way. To aid this process, simply clean the furniture with a soft bristle brush or sponge. Water spots or other discoloration may also occur during the weathering process. These will even out, and the furniture will achieve a uniform silver-grey.

CLEANING

The only maintenance necessary for your furniture is a periodic cleaning. This should be done with a solution of four parts laundry detergent or dish-washing soap and one-part bleach. Use a soft to medium bristle brush to clean your furniture When you are finished, rinse the entire piece to remove the dirt and any remaining solution. This is sufficient for general cleaning. For deeper cleaning - we recommend Indofurn’s range of teak cleaner and reviver. This will remove the silver-grey patina and restore the furniture’s original colour.

INDOOR USE

  • If you are using the teak furniture undercover we recommend that you oil it.
  • We suggest that you oil your furniture on a regular basis. Please see our application sheet for outdoor teak oil and follow application.
  • It is important to clean your teak regularly as it picks up dirt like any other furniture.
  • Application for oiling of outdoor teak furniture: Ensure that you furniture is clean, this can be cleaned with a medium bristle brush and some soapy water. Rinse the entire piece and ensure that it is dry before oiling. Use a paint brush to apply oil, ensure that you have a dry cloth to wipe off the excess oil once applied. Do not over oil as teak can only absorb so much oil and if to much is used the top layer will dry and it will remain wet below this layer. If one wishes, apply another light coat of oil once the first coat has dried.

CARING AND UNDERSTANDING YOUR TEAK.

  • Teak is a beautiful and durable hardwood. It requires little to no care and will maintain its strength and attractiveness for decades.
  • The polished appearance comes from oil occurring naturally in the wood. The oil on the surface will evaporate after a few days outdoors-it is the oil that remains below the surface that gives the wood its durability.
  • Only A grade quality teak is used for our outdoor teak collection.
  • Kiln dried to 13-15% moisture content at stabilisation point.
  • Epoxy adhesive in every joining area and every joint.
  • Only premium quality teak from a government regulatory body is used in the construction of our furniture. The combination of quality material and craftsmanship provides you with garden furniture of exceptional style and durability .The wood is selected for grain and colour within a single piece of furniture. The outdoor teak collection is dried to moisture content of below 15% to withstand the extreme weather conditions. This is one of the most important processes of manufacturing Teak Garden furniture as it eliminates subsequent shrinkage of the wood, mildew growing on the wood, non- performance of the glue and future uneven distortion of wood.
